Charity's Column
I have been working with our senior population for the past fourteen years. I have listened to dozens of their life stories and I am moved at the insight they have on life. My name is Charity, and I would like to share their stories to help us all remember where we come from. I have found a new kind of hope, in these people.

Waiting For Heaven

Column by Charity Griffin

For every memory, there is loss, and for every memory, there is hope.

This appears to be a very simple statement but it has taken me nearly 40 years to truly understand it. For me, this statement means so many different things, but mostly, it reminds me of all my friends that are war veterans.

I have worked with many of our World War II, Korean War and Vietnam War veterans.  I have had the pleasure of knowing the best of the best.  The honor, love and loyalty these men and women possess have taught me more than anything else. They have shared their stories with me and let me in to a place within each of them that has not been seen by many others. Through their choked back tears, I found a strength that would not have been possible if it wasn’t for their experiences. They have taught me that through heartache come strong lessons, lessons that will make us stronger than we ever thought possible. Larry used to tell me, “Half the lesson is learned at the moment you decide to pull up a chair and sit down!”

Larry was barley able to stand on his own, his body broken and hunched over because of the shrapnel still lodged in his back from serving our great country in World War II. I saw his physical pain every day and how his body wouldn’t allow him to do the things he wanted.  I also saw the strength he had in his heart and the self-dignity that hung on his shoulders. I am still to this day amazed that his physical pain never did overcome his will to teach others of self pride and self forgiveness.

Column by Charity Griffin Early in my career I worked at an assisted living Center in Orem. I attended to the needs of 16 residents every day. It was there that I met Rachel. Rachel was not the type of person to give “warm fuzzies”. She was stern with her words and her domineer was…

New Boutique Revives Old Santaquin Floral

SantaquinBoutique3

Niece of late florist carries on family tradition

The long-time residents of Santaquin may remember the little floral shop on 330 West Main.

The boutique that Santaquin resident Julie Dolph ran out of her home was closed years ago, and Dolph has since passed away. Now her niece and sister-in-law want to carry on her legacy by opening up a brand new floral shop of their own less than two blocks away from Julie’s original shop.

Necia Bennet of Santaquin and her mother Carmen Eva have revived the old Santaquin Floral in Dolph’s memory, this time calling it the Santaquin Floral and Boutique.

“She begged us for years to open one because her health got bad and she had to shut her’s down,” said Bennett of her aunt.

Bennett says she remembers helping her Aunt Julie in the floral shop by making corsages and boutonnieres when she was little. Carmen frequently helped out at the old Santaquin Floral and decided several years ago to enroll in floral school to improve her skills.

Love In The Refining Fire

By Kimberly Palmer I met him when I was fifteen.  Just about to start high school and as awkward as ever.  Somehow we became friends.  Even though I thought he was kind of nerdy and, from what I can gather, he thought I was completely fake.  As the years passed I developed a huge crush on…

Rockin’Eats Food Review – Santaquin Cheeseburgers

Rockin'Eats Santaquin Food Review | Cheeseburgers

by Rock Haun – Video Editor/Food Lover

Rock Haun of inSantaquin loves him some food. He’s not a man of exquisite tastes, but he knows a good meal when he eats one. He’s taken it into his own hands (and stomach) to find out where a guy or gal can find the best small-town cuisine in Santaquin. He pits similar eats from various well-known locations in town against each other to determine the Rockin’Eats of Santaquin.
